THE PERI-MENOPAUSE & MENOPAUSE YEARS
The menopause is a natural part of ageing that usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age, as a woman’s oestrogen levels decline. In the UK, the average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51. It may not feel like it at the time, but the menopausal years are a special time of a woman's life, a natural gradual process as a woman's body moves out of childbearing years and heads into a more relaxed and liberated phase. However, these years can also be the busiest of a woman's life as she may also be juggling family life with a career, running the home, caring for parents ect, bringing ever increasing levels of pressure and stress. Throw in changing hormone levels too and it's no wonder that this is a time when all women could do with a little extra help, a bit of time out and nurturing. Whilst hormones are essential for health, changing levels can affect women both physically and emotionally. For instance, Oestogen levels can start to drop, even during the peri-menopause stage, which has an effect on Cortisol, the stress hormone. Disruption in the balance of these two hormones can affect our primary stress hormone, Adrenaline. This can result in feelings of stress and anxiety, amongst other symptoms. It is important that women understand that the menopausal years are a natural process and feel empowered to ask for support to help them cope with the symptoms they experience |
Massage for Menopause
Massage treatments can help to relieve some of the symptoms and give you much needed self-care time. Menopause massage is a specialist massage, that differs from a normal relaxing or sports massage. It is a form of non-invasive, compassionate touch. It is very much a holistic based therapy treatment to help women manage both their physical and emotional reactions to menopause. Much of the evidence around menopause massage indicates that it helps to improve relaxation, sleep, immune function, as well as relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and stress brought on by the endless list of menopause symptom |
Reflexology for Menopause
Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the theory that different areas on the feet, lower leg and hand ('reflexes'), correspond with various areas, systems and organs of the body, and that these reflex areas aid relaxation and improves well-being. Reflexology may well be that extra help you could do with. It may help to bring balance for some of the uncomfortable emotional and physical symptoms, improving mood, easing anxiety, reducing hot flushes, fluid retention, foggy mind, depression, migraines, releasing tension and giving better sleep; helping us to cope better during this transitional time. Every woman is a unique individual, and the only way to find out whether Relexology will help you is to try it. Reflexology also combines well with Essential Oils which can be applied to the feet during the treatment. |
Essential Oils for Menopause
Essential Oils are sourced from natural constituents extracted from plants, trees, flowers and fruit, as natural solutions to support physical and emotional health. For instance, inhaling the aroma of just a single drop of a high quality Peppermint Oil can alleviate a headache and also helps to cool the body; whilst inhaling the aroma from a single drop of Lemon Oil can reenergise us when tired, and help clear the mind – and Lavender Oil is well-known for aiding relaxation and sleep. There are other specific essential oils whose properties are known to balance the endocrine system and help various symptoms during the menopausal years and many women find them extremely effective. It is also quite straightforward to learn how to use the basic selection of oils for menopause for everyday self-care, using either by Inhalation or applied to the skin (with care and dilution). A practitioner will explain how to use oils safely and effectively. (Note: not all essential oils are created equal. and it is important to ensure that Essential Oils used in this therapeutic way are of the highest and purest quality and are used safely. With care, and with the ongoing support of an essential oils specialist) |
Reiki for Menopause
Reiki (ray-kee) means Universal Life Energy – a form of energy healing originating from Japan offered with the hands away from the body or by light touch on the recipient who lies fully clothed on a treatment couch, to heal, balance and harmonise from head to foot. A Reiki treatment offers the opportunity to calm the nervous system, gain inner calm and grounding for the recipient. It can reduce the stress that perimenopause causes and reduce the rollercoaster of emotions by bring the energy centres back into balance. By restoring the hormonal balance in the body, aches and pains are sometimes alleviated, as are other physical menopausal symptoms that may be experienced. |
Jin Shin Jyutsu for Menopause
Jin Shin Jyutsu® (meaning: the art of the creator through the person of compassion) is an ancient healing art of balancing and harmonising life energy in the body – a gentle form of acupressure therapy that uses a light touch over specific areas of the body whilst fully clothed, restoring the flow of life energy along energy pathways which may be blocked due to a number of factors. During the peri-menopause and menopause years, the body and the emotions can seem to go a bit off course, but Jin Shin Jyutsu gives us a gentle healing art to ease the hormonal change and alleviate uncomfortable symptoms, so that we can move forward into the next phase of life with more comfort and confidence. There are also some easy Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help holds that everyone can learn to be empowered to help yourself in your everyday life. |
Homeopathy for Menopause

Homeopathy helps support natural healing of the female hormone system in a safe, gentle and non-invasive or toxic way It is extremely beneficial during the peri-menopause and menopause years because it helps with balancing hormones and assists the liver to detox from any excess hormones.
